HUDSON-CHATHAM WINERY WINS TWO MEDALS AT 2011 GRAND HARVEST AWARDS

March 26, 2011

Hudson-Chatham Winery, 08 Empire Red Reserve, $21.95 Bronze
Hudson-Chatham Winery, 09 Baco Noir Reserve, Casscles Vineyard, $19.95 Bronze

2011 Grand Harvest Awards to place at Villa Chanticleer, Healdsburg,on March 1-2, 2011.
Established in 1990, it is the only wine-judging event in North America that is based on terroir – a group of vineyards (or even vines) from the same region, belonging to a specific appellation, and sharing the same type of soil, weather conditions, grapes and wine making savoir-faire, which contribute to give its specific personality to the wine.

In other competitions, this factor is ignored. At the Grand Harvest, judges taste wines with other wines of the same appellation. Thus, with cross-regional competition removed, the inherent quality of wines can be seen without the influences that sometimes eclipse even a wine of very high quality.

According to wine competition chairman, Bill Traverso, “There are two reasons why this judging is different from any other wine competition. 1) Wines are judged by region and 2) you’ll now receive Judges’ Notes that give you professional feedback on your wine.”

A goal of Grand Harvest is to learn more about how terroir contributes qualities of excellence and distinctiveness to wines. Over the course of this event, judges have learned to recognize when terroir is – and is not – a factor of wine quality.

The competition included lots of big California, Washington, and Oregon competitors, as well as those form the Finger Lakes.

Hudson-Chatham is thrilled to be in their company. Congrats to winemaker, Steve Casscles, to manager Ralph Cooley, and everyone at Hudson-Chatham Winery.

Harvest Spirits’ Derek Grout is seen here (left) standing next to his copper, wrench in hand. In the April issue (on newsstands now): Source Code’s Jake Gyllenhaal takes our writer on a rigorous, revealing bike ride and reflects on his new life as a leading man; Paul Solotaroff reports from Yellowstone National Park, where global warming wreaks havoc on flora and fauna; and we present our annual rundown of the best places to live in the U.S.

Rural Intelligence Raves About Hudson-Chatham Baco Noir Reserve 2009

November 17, 2010

Chris Matthews gives a rave review of Hudson-Chatham’s 2008 and 2009 Baco Noirs in the most recent issue of Rural Intelligence.

“As often happens with a small production, gold medal-winner, however, the 2008 is now sold out. Fortunately, the De Vitos have kept some bottles back as “library” wines.

“Most of us remember the miserable, wet summer of 2009. In that context, the newly released 2009 Baco Noir is a pleasant surprise. While definitely lighter in color and body than the 2008, reflecting the difficult vintage, it has pretty, floral and plummy aromas reminiscent of Pinot Noir, and bright red fruit with a dash of pepper on the palate. The 2009’s lovely fruit and zesty acidity will make it a versatile—and delightful—local addition to a Thanksgiving table.

Conclusion: two very different, but pleasing wines, showing that Baco Noir can make exceptional wines in disparate (even bad) years in the HV.”

He has a lot more to say. Go and read the whole thing at:
