Buffalo is closer to its first average snowfall than you might think

Now that Labor Day weekend is officially over, many are eagerly anticipating the start of the fall season, even though the calendar technically says it’s summer again.

Fall in western New York is awesome. The fall foliage is amazing, as are all of the events that take place over the next six to eight weeks in the area, such as haunted houses, pumpkin farms, and apple picking.

But the weather will also get cooler and believe it or not, we’re not that far away from the average first annual snowfall for Buffalo.

The first average snowfall, according to the National Weather Service, is October 24. This is when the first flakes usually fly to Buffalo and it’s just over six weeks away.

The first measurable (average) snowfall is two weeks later, on November 8. The first thumb is on November 18. Again, on average. It could happen sooner or later, so we’ll have to wait and see.

You remember the surprise October storm, which occurred late October 12 and early October 13, 2006, which crippled the area with heavy, wet snowfall and downed tree branches and power lines. .

“Snowvember” was a week before Thanksgiving in 2014, which brought seven to eight feet of snow to parts of southern cities; so we know that heavy snow can occur early in western New York.

By the way, November 2000 brought a famous “surprise” lake-effect snowstorm in November. Six years later we had the surprise October storm, and eight years later it was Snowvember.

I’m just saying we’re sort of “because” of an early season snowstorm. I hope that doesn’t happen, however, I think I speak for almost everyone in western New York.
