About 3.3% of auto insurance consumers switched companies in the first quarter of 2021, according to the JD Power report “Auto Insurance Loyalty Indicator & Shopping Trends”.

This rate of business change shows a continued return to the patterns seen before the Covid-19 pandemic. At the start of the pandemic, auto insurance purchasing activity surged: 45% of auto insurance consumers bought new auto insurance quotes, reduced coverage, changed businesses, or have even abandoned their policies.

JD Power also measures consumer loyalty to auto insurance companies on a quarterly basis. In the first quarter of 2021 compared to the previous quarter, these companies had increased consumer loyalty:

  • Auto Club Group (AAA member)
  • CSAA
  • Hanover
  • The Hartford
  • Safeco

And these auto insurers had reduced customer loyalty:

  • Amica Mutual
  • COUNTRY Financial
  • Erie Insurance
  • Kemper
  • MAPFRE
